sion of our frontiers toward the Indian country, and punishment of the treacherous tribes, during your term of office, will be faithfulty recorded by the historian- In regard to the financial affairs of this period it will be found that the current expenses were duly audited & paid without being chargeable to subsequent years- Whereas during the previous and subsequent periods such is not the case, it appearing as though there was an effort to smother up and disguise the actual state of things as much as possible, paying only such of the expenses as were most interesting to those in office- Much has been said about economy during the last few years- Where are the charges of the Mier invasion? of the famous Military call' 7 of 1842, which brought hundreds of men from the United Statee for the purpose of insulting them ? Of abandoning the seat of Gov- ernment & permitting the public buildings and every thing pertaining to the govt. offices to go to decay & waste? (and, I might ask, where are the corresponding benefits n- A little attention to the passing of the law for auditing the public debt will enable the country to know how & by whom her public debt has been contracted- And as you are at Austin it may be interesting to you to give some suggestions .respecting it- I was in hope General, that you would have :filled one of the high stations under our state organization-and yet hope such will be the case- In a conversation with Genl Rusk just before he 8tarted to Washington I found him entertaining my own wishes upon this sub- ject-and furthermore that he is free from that sectional feeling, which has characterized some of our eastern men toward the west- and hP, js sensible of the great injustice which has been done to the west by de- serting the seat of Government &c- l return in a few days to Nacogdoches, where I should be glad to receive a line from you- and also to meet you in person should you ever visit the east- With much esteem I remain yours Genl M.
