To THE TEXAS SENATE 1
Executive Department, City of Houston, Oct. 6th, 1837.
To the Honorable, the Senate of the Republic of Texas. Gentlemen: I have had the honor, today, of receiving a resolution, relating to S. Rhoads Fisher. vVith great deference to the wishes of the Senate, I cannot and will not reinstate him, the reasons, when adduced, the Honorable Senate will be satis- fied with. The President with great respect apprehends, that the Honorable Senate are not apprised of the fact that S. Rhoads Fisher transcended his furlough several weeks, and the President takes pleasure in assuring the Honorable Senate, that the duties of the Department will be better performed, under its present arrangement, than if S. Rhoads Fisher were at its head. The President deplores the extremity of his Indisposition and trusts in God, that in a few days he will rise in health, when he ·will be enabled to show to the Senate such manifestations as will convince them of the propriety of his course adopted, in rela- tion to his Cabinet. Sam Houston [Rubric] [Endorsed] : Message from the President relative to reinstat- ing S. R. Fisher recd 7th October 1837 Secret Session re- moved injunction of Secrecy. 1 From the original letter owned by Mrs. Madge W. Hearne. For some information concerning S. Rhoads Fisher, see Volume II, 458.
