company and never seen him in the least disguised by indulgence of any kind (a rare quality in young men,) that I feel an unusual degree of solicitude for his success. I am aware that it is not my province to claim any thing in his favor, as I_am not from his state, nor to urge his claims over those of others, however, whatever I may do, will be done in good faith, and I will solicit nothing in favor of Mr. Vernon, but what I really tliink to be to the advantage of the service. If you can consistently appoint him a Captain in the Army, where his service will be active, I will regard the favor as one of personal gratification, and pleasure to myself.
