To Thomas Toby Esqr., Texian Agent, New Orleans. Sir. On the receipt of this notice you will desist from all further sales of land scrip, and hold subject to the order of Colonel A. Sidney Thruston, any means which you may have be- longing to this Government, so as to enable him to purchase sup- plies for the army in the field. It never was in the contemplation of congress , or the author- ities of this country that land scrip should be sold on a credit; so far as I am advised. I must again most earnestly request of you, to forward to this Government your accounts; showing the state of your Agency and the condition of Government so far as it may have had trans- action, with you or thro' your Agency. It is most desirable that the army should be well supplied, with all needful comforts and they of the best quality. No provisions, unless sound, and whole- some, should be sent to the army. Col. Thruston has requisi- tions to file of supplies and I beseech you to place the necessary means within his control. If possible I would be happy to see you at the meeting of Congress, which will take place on the first day of May next. · Sam Houston [Rubric] 'From the original owned by Mrs. Madge W. Hearne. For Thomas Toby, see Volume II, 297. APPOINTING A CONSUL 1 [Houston appoints Nathaniel Townsend to be consul of the Republic of Texas at New Orleans, March 30, 1837.] J. Pinckney Henderson, Secretary of State.
