Galveston, Texas, 19th November, 1845.
Hon. James Buchanan Sir, In anticipation of the admission of Texas into the con- federacy of the U States many applications are making for ap- pointments, which will be within the gift of the President, or Heads of Department. Therefore, the object of this letter is to announce to you that A. B. Shelby,2 Esq., will at the proper time be an applicant for the situation of District Judge of the Federal Court in Texas. I need not mention to you that Judge Shelby has been a Judge of the circuit, or District Court, the Judges of which, compose the Supreme Court in Texas. When the time may arrive at which action will be needful, the Judge will have laid before your Department and for the information of his Excellency, the President, testimonials of the very highest character in our country. Dear Sir:
No present to me at this time could have been more acceptable than a fine Durham, as it is my intention to carry out the object that first induced my location in this country-that of stockraising. The present condition of our country, in conse- quence of its annexation to the United States, will leave men free [r] to pursue the more pleasing and profitable business of agriculture and herdsmen, than has been allowed for many years to our citizens, while under the various influences of excitement and uncertainty.
