serenity and with full faith in the promises of salvation through the Redeemer. I have seen the corge since my arrival; the visage is much as it was in life. OCTOBER, 1845-DECEMBER, 1845 To J. L. FARQUHAR, S. R. ROBERTS, AND OTHERS 1
Washington, October 27, 1845 Gentlemen:- Your tender of a public dinner to me, I have received with much pleasure, and regret that it is not in my power to accept the invitation; I esteem it a mark of agreeable respect. But far above this do I value the " continued regard and consideration" of my friends.- The estimate which you have been pleased to place upon my civil and military services to this .country is exceedingly grateful to me, and I can assure you that my patriotism and zeal for the welfare of Texas, were at all times equal to the capacity which I possessed of being serviceable to her interests. My integrity of motive and action, are best known to those who are familiar with circumstances which neither my duty to my country, nor myself required me to promulgate to the world. To vindicate myself against charges that have been made, that I was ever opposed to annexation, has not been my course of life. If the a·ccusations have resulted either from ignorance or malignity, I can pity their authors.- My conduct is a refutation to all such charges. I am no new convert to the policy of an- nexation, therefore, I have deemed it unnecessary either to be- come clamorous, or troublesome, in support of a measure which originated under my administration, and was conducted under my directions, until my term as Executive expired in December last. It may be of some importance that I should recur to the origin of a policy, which has engrossed so large a portion of the interests and attention of this community.
