Note.- The handwriting of Capt. Geo. W. Poe, Acting Adju- tant General. He delivered this letter to Colonel Fannin who ignored it. A. J. H.[ouston] 7/2/23. [July 2, 1823]. 1 Mr. Franklin Williams's Collection of Houston Materials, Houston, Texas. Mr. Williams has generously put at the disposal of the editors his collection of Houston materials, among which is a bulky volume of letters signed by his Grandfather, covering a part of the years 1841-1844. The binder's title of the volume is "Private Executive. Records of the Second Term of Sam Houston's Administration of the Government of the Republic of Texas." A large part of the documents published in this fourth volume of The Writings of Sam, Houston are taken from that book, and to shorten the title they are accredited to "Houston's Private Executive Record Book."

If possible I wish you to report in person at head- quarters as soon as practicable after the receipt of this order You can detail such officer of your command as you may deem proper to succeed you during your absence from the district which has been assigned to you. Lieut Colo Neil~ has been ordered in command of the Post of Bexar The detail being special and at the same time indespensable he will remain until further orders.
