settled at Washington. Before he had had time to begin his practice, he was called upon to go out on an expedition against the Indians. He went on several more--in 1838, 1841, and 1842, as well as participating in the campaign against Woll in 1842. In 1857 he moved to Galveston, where he built up a large practice. During the Civil War he was the examining physician on the staff of General T. B. Howard; later he was a teacher in both the Galveston Hospital and Medical College, and at Tulane University. He was one of the founders of the Texas Medical Association, and served as the second president of that organization. In 1838, he became a member of the Masonic Lodge-Phoenix Lodge No. ~at Washington, and remained a staunch Mason throughout his life. He was also a lifelong Democrat, and always a supporter of Sam Houston. He and Ashbel Smith were the last physicians to visit Houston's bedside in 1863. He married Frances A. Rucker of Washington County in 1839. See George P.
