To WILLIAM VISER, M. C. ROGERS, AND OTHERS 1
Washington, October 15, 1844. To Messrs. Wm. Viser, M. C. Rogers, and Others, Committee Gentlemen- In response to your kind and friendly invitation of 18th September, to partake of a public festivity at Huntsville at such time as might meet my convenience, I am gratified that I now have it in my power to say: that without some unlooked for casualty, I will have the pleasure of meeting my fellow cit- izens of your town and neighborhood, on Wednesday, the 23rd instant. You may rest assured that I fully appreciate the sentiments of friendly regard and confidence which you have expressed for me; nor can I withhold the expression of my gratification that you are pleased with the course of administration, which I have conducted for several years with the constitutional aids ·which have been accorded me. The term of my service is about to expire, and I have no motive to disguise the sincerity of my sentiments. I can now readily and freely express my gratitude towards those who have·so long been the firm and unyielding supporters of principle.
