WRITINGS OF SAM HOUSTON, 1844,

County, in order that the citizens of that part of the country might intercept their retreat, and, if possible, extirpate them. You and the citizens on the ground-men accustomed to fron- tier life-can better devise plans for the safety of the frontier, if it is really threatened, than those at a distance; and it must be done with the least expense possible to the government. It is desired that you continue your despatches to the govern- ment, till you are able to return to Washington. If you can transmit intelligence to Towson and Fort Washita, it is desired that you do so. As to the vVitchetaws who reside in the United States, it is certainly the duty of the United States to restrain them; and I doubt not that the officers at those posts will interpose all their authority and force for this purpose.
