REMITTING A FINE AGAINST THOMAS SKIDMORE 1

[The proclamation recites that Thomas Skidmore was convicted in Lamar County of assault with intent to kill and fined $100. Houston remits the fine in response to "representations of a satis- factory character." To Thomas G. Western, Esq., Superintendent of Indian Affairs: Sir,-Your communication of the 26th ultimo, is at hand. I regret that there should be any excitement on the frontier aris- ing from apprehension of the Indians. Ere this time the whole truth is probably known. The Wichetaws from the United States are very bad Indians, and doubtless are incited by white men or refugees and insub- ordinates from other tribes. I am satisfied that those Indians that make war in Texas will never commit aggression or provoke hostilities. It is contrary to the nat\}re of man to involve himself and his women and children in ruin. I regret that you did not indicate your intention to rally a sufficient force from the neighborhood of Franklin and other por- tions of Robertson and Milam counties to ensure the safety of the frontiers. If an incursion should be made upon the frontiers, and the advice you have had as to the association of the Indians for that purpose should prove correct, it would be exceedingly desirable that you should expedite intelligence of it to Fannin
