A PROCLAMATION CALLING A GENERAL ELECTION 1

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS.

Whereas, the term for which the President and .Vice President of the Republic of Texas were elected, will expire on the 2d day in December Next: and Whereas, the term for which the several members, composing the Representative Branch of the eighth Congress of the Re- public of Texas, were elected, will expire on the 2d day of Sep- tember next; and Whereas, the term, for which ·the several members in the Senatorial branch of the said Congress, from the District of Brazoria; the district composed of the counties of Bastrop, Gon- zales, Fayette and Travis; the district composed of the counties of Jackson, Matagorda and Victoria; the district composed of the counties of Austin, Colorado, and Fort Bend, were elected, will also expire on the said second day of December next; and Whereas, by a resolution of the Senate adopted on the 5th day of February, A. D. 1844, the seat of the sitting member from the Senatorial district, composed of the counties of Refugio, Goliad, and San Patricio, was declared to be \'acant; therefore, Be it known, that I, Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas, do, hereby, in the name, and by the authority, of said Republic, order and direct, that an election for President and Vice President of the Republic, and for Representatives to the ninth Congress of the same; and also for Senators to fill the vacancies aforesaid in the said Senatorial branch of the Congress be held in the several counties of the Republic and districts afore- mentioned, on the first Monday (the second day) of September next ensuing. And it is further ordered, that the Chief Justices of the said several counties give legal notice of said elections, and have the same conducted, in all respects, in accordance with the Constitution and laws, regulating elections; that proper cer- tificates be given to the Representatives and Senators elect; and that due returns be made, according to law. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the great seal of the Republic to be affixed.
