To WILLIAM BRYAN 1
Washington, 31st March, 1844.
To William Bryan, Esquire, Sir-·-
It appears from papers that have reached the depart- ment of this Government, that a certain Edward Hall 2 is acting as "Consular Agent" of the Republic of T'exas at New Orleans. Now, I wish to be informed if this is the same Mr. E. Hall of whom we have conversed on past occasions, and he, who you assured me, had no connection with you in business, touching the interests or concerns of this nation? I informed you that his conduct in connection with Anthony B. Shelby, Esq., had been such as to preclude him from any connection with the affairs of Texas. It was made known to you that a Mr. Edward Hall had been employed in this county in trying to obtain false and slan- derous certificates from a man by the name of Sampson Connell against me and arraigning my conduct at the battle of the horse- shoe in 1814, in the U [nited] States. I hope you will find it convenient for you to reply directly to me in relation to this matter, for you will readily perceive that upon full evidence of the conduct of E. Hall, that I can have no confidence in his integrity or moral worth; and therefore, such men cannot be invested with the discharge of any public duty. If it is the same man, his baseness will deserve the rebuke of every honest man. The creature who can pa.nder to faction, and covertly assail the reputation of any man by obtaining or endeavoring to obtain from a man in a state of intoxication, false certificates, for the purpose of promulgating slander, is base and unprincipled
