become a well regulated community. If as an independent power, it could not become so, and should become an integral part of another independency, I hope it will enjoy peace. My patience is wearing away. "Hope deferred maketh the heart sick"; and while all this is passing slowly, the sand in my hour-glass runs steadily and swiftly. Our courses are all marked out by an Almighty God and Wise Providence, and yet they seem to us to be wayward, a!1d perplexity is the end of all mortal wisdom. To WILLIAM S. MURPHY 1

Private

Washington, Texas, 30th March, 1844.

To General W. S. Murphy, &c., &c., &c., Houston, Texas. My dear General,- I do hope you are croaking to me in your note of yesterday about your rejection by the Senate of the U [nit eel] States. I have, to be sure, no business with the internal political affairs of that Government, nor do I assume to exercise the right of saying what ought or ought not to be done by any part or portion of the government. But I have the right, the power and the faculty to feel regret that anything should at this time withdraw you from this Government, until the work which you have been instrumental in commencing should be terminated either by annexation, or rejection of Texas by the U[nited] States. I would think in the event of your rejection by the Senate, that Mr. Tyler would not feel himself bound to make a second nom- ination to this session of their Congress, and that as you are perfectly acquainted, that he would retain you here until matters are settled in some way between the two countries. If it is possible, my dear General, I will be down by Wednesday night next, with the Madam and Sam, but will only pass one or two days on my way to the Trinity, as I suppose I will have to attend the Indian treaty. Write to me if you please, at all times,
