Washington, 30th March, 1844.
To Captain Charles Elliot, &c., &c., &c., My dear Captain,- A failure took place with the express who brought your despatches, and was to have returned with answers. Therefore, they were not sent till now, when I have time to add a line. I hope to be in Houston on the 3d proximo, but only for a day or two, on my way to Trinity. I expect to return and go to the Indian treaty. The season and all, I hope, will render it a pleasant time. By the last accounts it is said that the Indians all are anxious to make a peace and wish to do it with the head chief of Texas. I have heard that you will pass the summer at the White Sulphur Springs in Virginia. I hope you will let me know where you will be, for it may so happen that you would not be reluctant to try our climate again. It is truly a source of regret to me that I could not see and converse with you before your departure. I am still the same devoted friend to my country that I have ever been, and my abiding desire is to see it at peace with all the world and ..
