WRITINGS OF SAM HOUSTON, 1844
To JAMES REILY 1
Washington, March 18th 1844.
To Colonel James Reily: Dear Colonel :-Your favor of the 13th inst., was received by last mail and now I do not reply to it at large for reasons which I will state. The time is at hand when the treaty at Tah-woc-cany Creek will take place with the Comanches unless an accident should occur. It will be proper for all the commissioners to be there at farthest by the 15th proximo. If you can attend it will gratify me; but if it is not consistent with your wishes and interest I cannot desire it. If you were at this place and appointed, the amount needful for your trip could be advanced, but I could not advance the whole till the service should be rendered. Colonel Neill and Colonel L. Williams will be the other commissioners. If you accept the appointment, I hope you will have an oppor- tunity to review your letter to me, and will withdraw it upon reflection. And if you should not accept the appointment, I hope you will withdraw the letter, and not place me under the un- pleasant necessity of answering it, as you requested. Now, an answer would only open a subject which would neither be profit- able nor to us pleasant Mrs. Houston's health is better than it has been since she left Houston, and I entertain hopes of her entire recovery as the Spring opens; and if she does not visit the low country soon she will write to Madam Reily. She is extremely anxious to see her and her friends in Houston. Mrs. Houston unites in kindest re- gards and affection to Madam, yourself, and John, and bids me say to Madam, "Sam has no less than four teeth," and I say, "Sam's mother has recovered from her ecstasy at the discovery of his first tooth." Truly your friend, Sam Houston [Rubric] u•Houston's Private Executive Record Book," pp. 510-511, courtesy of .Mr. Franklin Williams. For James Reily, see Volume II, 374.
