To JOHN ToRREY 1
Washington, 15th February, 1844.
To John Torrey, Esq. My dear Sir,-
I wrote to Mr. Sloat~ not to go on to the Comanches, if there was any probability of his meeting the Kiowas, as he and others of Snively's command had a fight with their tribe and killed some of their warriors. They might recog- nize Mr. Sloat; and the Indian character would require that they should take life for life. As he did not go on, he will visit Houston and let you know how important for the peace of the frontier as well as your individual interest, it is that you should have goods and a trading house at the present, until after the treaty, when you will be able to make a permanent location, or at least one which will remain for years. It is to be deplored that you could not have had goods at some point on the Brazos. If you had, it would have been of great service to our cause, and prevented Strouda from trading and using the influence against a treaty and peace with the Indians. His conduct has convinced me that he is a bad man, and has no regard for the interest or safety of his country; but is willing to sacrifice his country to his own cupidity and avarice.
