THE WRITINGS OF SAM HOUSTON

1821-1832 To STERLING BREWERl

September 29, 1821. This change will allow all the officers of the Division to vote with convenience. If I have claims to the office of 1l1ajor General, I trust my countrymen will duly consider them. I have been long and intimately acquainted with the duties of a soldier and an officer; I have risen from the rank of a private in the regular army; I have experienced a soldier's feelings; I have learned to respect them; I have done my duty, and I will be always proud to do it, in return for the confidence of my countrymen. Sam Houston 'Nashville Whig, October 3, 1821. This newspaper item, as well as the information that follows is through the courtesy of Professor vV. C. Bink- ley, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. He says: "This letter does not seem to be complete, and it has not been possible to determine what change is referred to in the first sentence. Sterling Brewer served as a senator from the counties of Robertson, Dickson, and Hickman in the 12th and 13th legislatures of Tennessee, 1817-1821; and as senator from the counties of Davidson, Dickson, and Williamson in the 14th legislature, 1821-1823. He was speaker of the senate in the 14th legislature."
