To Major J. H. Cocke, My dear Major-I send you a draft in my favor drawn upon my salary for two thousand five hundred and nineteen dollars and thirty five cents. You will please dispose of it, or let it be done by any safe friend, in exchange for gold and silver if you can, as much above ninety cents as possible-but not at less rate than ninety cents on the dollar. If this cannot be done with propriety in your situation, let the amount 1·emain to my credit in the. Custom house.
