To THE Nu PI KAPPA SOCIETY OF KENYON COLLEGE 1 Washington, October 28th, 1843. To the Secretary of the Nu Pi Kappa Society of Kenyon College. My Dear Sir, I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt, after a very long delay, of a note from the President and Secre- tary of the N. Pi. K. Society o:f Kenyon College, informing me in the most flattering terms, of my election by that Body as one of its honorary members. In return for their valued distinction, do me the favor to present to the society my most grateful acknowledgments. I accept this mark of their too partial consideration, not as a thing of course, but with the sincerest homage for the great principles and good objects for which as a brotherhood they have associated themselves together and continue to labor. May they never be wanting in any of those virtues which should char- acterize the American student whose eye is directed to the good of society and the glory of his country! Their magnificant confederacy presents to their ambition boundless fields for the application and exercise of native genius, talent, and learning. Letters, science, and the arts must find there a genial and happy home. On becoming a member of the N. Pi. K. Society allow me to express the hope that, though widely separated, we may all be closely united in the common task of promoting, in the sight of Heaven, the best interests of our country and our fellowmen.
