To GEORGE W. HocKLEY 1

Private

Washington, 14th July, 1843.

My dear Hockley, I have sent you word but have omitted writing to you on the subject of a trip to Mexico. When it will be necessary to send I am not yet certain; but before long I hope to have [such] intelligence as will authorize the Executive to make appointment of commissioners to attend to our affairs in Mexico. I hope it will be in your power to go as well as Mr. Samuel M. Williams. I trust it will be in the power of the Government to raise funds sufficient to support commissioners until the meet- ing of the next Congress. I expect to visit the Indian treaty, and will be absent, if I should do so, until the first of September. So soon as the yellow fever subsides at Vera Cruz, or such time as I can raise money, .I will wish the commissioners to set out.
