To CHARLES ELLIOT 1
Private
Washington, June 29, 1843.
My dear Captain, It would give me much pleasure to write you a long letter, as I have much to say, but owing to a press of business, and the indisposition of Mrs. H. as well as Miss Royston, I am not in a mood to write many things, which to my mind, import a great deal. Colonel Kinney~ will reestablish his rancho at Corpus Christi; and if you should think well of it, it might be well to appoint a vice consul at that place. The effect would be very beneficial upon the disposition of the Mexicans as well as the Texians, and e,·en upon the Indians who have recently depredated upon the poor families at that point. The Irish families who have a claim to be British subjects, will derive confidence and resume their former habitations and pursue the arts of peace with delight and advantage.
