To THOMAS J. RusK 1
Private
Washington, 13th March, 1843.
To Major General Thomas J. Rusk My Dear General: Although I am much engaged, I take pleasure in redeeming the promise contained in my hasty note which I wrote to you, accompanying the laws of the last session of the Congress. You will find the "bill for frontier protection" very different in its provisions from what you anticipated. For you to offer any comments upon it would be needless. I have had a copy of my veto made out and forward it with much pleasure for your perusal. It contains, in part, my honest objections to it as a measure, or means for any benefit to the country. It had its origin in faction, and had the result of the election for Major General been anticipated, it would not have received the support of some who were its advocates.
