T'obin Dear Sir: Deeming it a duty that I owe to you as an officer late in the service of the State, I herewith send you a detailed 1·eport of the transactions upon the Rio Grande since the com- mencement of the Cortinas Wars. The copy is a correct tran- script of the report made by Captain John S. Ford 2 to Lieutenant Thomas of Major Heintzelman's 3 command of the United States Troops, in the which you will observe certain charges against yourself and your command. Sam Houston. E. W. Smith in 1854, with your certificate of cor- rectness of the same appended. It will be necessary also to attach the certificate of the Secre- tary of State.
