Russell, Acting Commissioner of the Boundary Survey Sir, You will proceed with as little delay as possible to Grayson County to take cha1·ge of the property belonging to the Boundary Survey, and expose the same to public sale, or if deemed un- advisable, to sell at present, you will immediately confer with this Department as to its disposition. Executive Department, February 6, 1860. My dear Madam: Your esteemed favor of January 16th is now before me. In reference to the claims granted to Don Joseph Valier by the Spanish Government, I must confess that I am not familiar with them, but were I to express an opinion, it would be to advise you to retain your present property, rather than squander it in pursuit of lands, the tenure of which is uncertain, and which you may never acquire. Titles to land for military service are oftener insecure than otherwise, and I regard it as more than probable that Congress will never confirm such old grants by the Spanish Government. Sam Houston.
