W.] Hall intimates that possibly that you may not have understood my orders, with regard to the march- ing of your men. My orders were that you should proceed with as little delay as possible to the station assigned to you with the main body of your men, leaving as few as possible behind to follow you, with as much dispatch as possible, and subject to your own orders. You may find that the state of the frontier requires that you should make one or more of your stations in Clay, which you will proceed to do, at least five or ten miles beyond the settlements. In the stationing and the disposition of your men, you will so arrange it as to give the greatest amount of protection to the frontier inhabitants and should you deem it necessary, you will extend your lines of operations further West and contract them from the East. Hall, January 19, 1860, both documents in this volume.
