WRITINGS OF SAM HOUSTON, 1859
Galveston. They placed their youngest brother, Harvey H. Allen, in that banking house to represent their interests. Later this same Harvey had one of the largest general mercantile houses of the city of Houston, first in partsership with his brother, Samuel L. Allen, but later by himself. His son, Dr. 0. Fisher Allen, now more than eighty years old, resides at Austin, Texas. Dr. 0. F. Allen has given much information concerning the six Allen brothers in his booklet, The City of Houston from Wilderness to Wonder.
To SIMON Muss1NA 1
Independence, 6th Aug. 1859. My Dear Mussina, I could not tell what had become of you, so I was rejoiced to hear from you. I had seen your late expose -Beautiful! The jig is up with Watrous. All his friends covert and open were upon me, but I think they are silenced by the vote of Monday last. My friends think I will be elected by 10,000 votes. I paid no attention to the election. I have not turned on my heel on account of it. I made one speech at Nacogdoches/ as I was there purchasing sheep and cattle, and attending to the case of Forbes vs. Labadie,3 not tried. Do write to me often. Ferret out those rascals. I told you of my suspicions. Ready, Craig &c., &c., I was sure were in the cabal. Oh what beautiful corruption has been in the Committee, as well as in the H. of R. 'Tis a corrupt age. We must tree the rascals, in many places. The people will wake up, and I think that conventions have run their mad dog round. Had it not been for the love I bear the Union, and my strong devotion to Conservatism, I would never have allowed my name to go before the people for any office on earth. I told our friends so, and had I thought that it would [be] necessary that my name be used, I would have told our friend Stuart,· 1 and he would not have gone into the convention. I told him that I would not let it be used, but I afterwards saw that to meet the issues of disunion and the African slave trade, I must face my foes and make the issue direct. This will not be a fair test, be the result as it may! For the reason that the name of Democracy, & Convention held thousands by the Collar, the Bogusites look bad and are sorry. I will write to Alexander to send me the hints sent him by you, or to Jack Harris.~ Present my kind regards to all our friends. To Clemens & Lady, Mickles, Lawrences, Thayers, &c., &c. Do write often and tell me of your health. Mine is prime!
