The Writings of Sam Houston, Volume VII

PREFACE

For assistance in the compilation of Volume VII of The Writings of Sam Houston the editors are indebtea to Mr. Herbert Gambrell, Mrs. Margaret John, Mrs. Madge W. Hearne, Mr. Temple H. Morrow, Mr. Thomas W. Streeter, Mr. ·w. A. Philpott, the Rosen- berg Library of Galveston, and the Pennsylvania Historical Society. Our attention has been directed to certain resolutions, noted in the Journal of the Senate of the United States, etc. On thoughtful consideration, we have decided that most of these documents can have no possible historical or biographical value; and we have, in consequence, omitted them. The saving of space has become a desideratum in this undertaking. We have also omitted a num- ber of purely formal documents signed by Houston during his term as governor of Texas, beginning in January, 1860-such documents as pardons, remissions of fines, requisitions for extr~- dition and appointment to minor positio_ns in public service, including notaries public. A list of all these documents which we have omitted is printed in abbreviated form at the end of the Calendar pages v-xv, with some clue to the location in the records. They are not likely to be needed by the most industrious and insatiable investigator. Volume VIII, with a comprehensive index, will conclude this documentary publication.
