FEBRUARY, 1859

To HENRY S. RANDALL1

Washington, 1st Feby. 1859. My Dear Sir, I thank you for your very welcome letter, and shou'd I live to locate myself at "Cedar Point," where I propose to go so soon as I return to Texas; I will be happy to see you there. My object is to raise flocks, for wool as well as for mutton. It is on the Bay of Galveston, where I propose to settle. Satisfied as I am that it is well adapted to the purpose of sheep raising. I have not yet received the Galveston News to which you refer in your letter. My main object in after life of a temporal char- acter, will be to raise stock, and sheep will be my main reliance, for profit, as well as for ple~sure. Truly Thine, Sam Houston [Rubric] Henry S. Randall, Esq., Cortland Village, N. York.

A VINDICATION OF TEXAS FROM CHARGES MADE BY JUDGE JOHN C. WATROUS BEFORE THE CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEE INVESTI- GATING HIS CONDUCT, FEBRUARY 3, 1859 1 In pursuance of notice, I ask leave to introduce a bill to repeal so much of the act of February 21, 1857, entitled "An Act to divide the State of Texas into two judicial districts," as creates and establishes a district court of the United States in the eastern district of the State of Texas, and to incorporate the same with the western district of the said State. 2 Before the motion is put, however, I desire to make some remarks explanatory of its object. I might have claimed this as a privileged question; but not wishing to do so, I have determined to submit the remarks which I wish to make in relation to it on the presentation of this bill. I need not inform the honorable Senate, or you, Mr. President, that a subject of much excitement has occupied the attention of the Congress of the United States, in relation to the impeach- ment of one of the judicial officers of Texas.
