WRITINGS OF SAM HOUSTON, 1858

TO MRS. HOUSTON 1

Washington, 18 May, 1858. My Dear Love. Unexpectedly, I had the gratification last night to receive your letter of the 5th Inst. I say unexpectedly, because I had supposed that you would conclude that I must be on my way home, before a letter could reach me here. I am full of regrets to think that you are constantly suffering, and I cannot be there with you to try, at least to alleviate your sufferings. I am consoled by the fact that Mother and Sister are with you, and can cheer you up, and keep you from the "blues," if you were disposed.to have them, which would be excusable in your situation. If I were with you, I could, at least, provoke you, if I failed to keep you in a good humor. The latter I would prefer, but the former, rather than see you indulge in low spirits. Irritation for some persons is a cure for low spirits. It causes the blood to circulate and the consequence is, cheerfulness after awhile. Again, my Dear, we have a dark and cloudy day. I look for rain before it closes. This morning I arose with a headache, tho' it is very unusual, and as the day progresses, I feel not much relieved. I have for some time purposed getting blecl. I ought to do it twice a year, in my opinion, and perhaps not oftener. There is an important matter contained in your letter, that Cousin Monte will probably marry a pretty red-headed Girl, as man proposes, at the association. WeH, I hope that he may get a good wife. You know my Dear that I approve of "Red Heads." I never saw one silly or simple, and it has been a remark of physiologists, that they are chaste. If Mont marries, I hope he will turn in and make himself a go9d lawyer. He is now at an age that he can, if he marries, head on with the greatest ad- vantage. Tell him not to wait for my return, if all things are ready, marry, for if I were at home, and you could not attend, I would not! I have just paid $100, the last payment on your car- riage. My Buggy, I have not paid for. Its price is $100. It will be yours as well as mine. Thy Devoted Houston. Margaret. P. S. I send silk winders or reels for distribution as you please. They were made in the Senate Chamber.
