To MAJOR N. CRUGER 1
Galveston , 30th April, 1842.
Private! Sir
In furtherance of the general orders you have this day received from the war and marine department, you will proceed with as little delay as possible direct to South Carolina, and there raise funds and men to an unlimited extent for the army of Texas, under you immediate command. I hereby give you authority, in case you can not raise means sufficient, to carry out the expedition now intended, which I have fully explained to you, to promise and guarantee the reemburse- ment of any funds that you may be able to raise from influential individuals, out of the very first military chest the army may possess. Your private expenses, must be deducted out of the funds raised by you. It is with great pleasure that I am able to confide this im- portant and trustworthy mission, to one who like yourself stands preeminent not only in my opinion, but also in that of the people at large; and to one who I know well, will exert his able talents in the cause of Texas.
