Galveston, 27th April, 1842.

My dear Colonel Your favors have reached me, and I was happy to hear that you were in good spirits, and hoped soon to be in the presence of the amicable and accomplished ----- and friends in Nashville. God grant you all luck and the con- summation of your noble desires. You have my true and loyal regards for perfect success. I hope you will find a smoothe sea and a safe anchorage in the haven of your love! I was not prepared to hear, that you were about to leave for Nashville, until it was too late to apprise you of my calculations. But 'tis all right and I am satisfied and hope all will result in good. I have appointed General James Davis 2 to supply your place at New Orleans, so as not to encumber Col. Washington 3 or to interfere with the enterprise in which he is engaged. I am employing all my powers in preparation to move or to meet our tawny friends! of the South. We have to rely much on our friends in the United States. The assurance of aid from them will induce a course which will
