AN ELECTION PROCLAMATION 1
PROCLAMATION BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS Whe1·eas, by a resolution of the Senate of the Republic of Texas, adopted on the fourth day of January, A. D. 1844, it appears that the Senatorial District, composed of the Counties of Washington, Montgomery and Brazos, is now unrepresented in the Senate of this Republic; therefore, Be it known that I, Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas, in virtue, of the authority vested in me by law, do, by these presents, order and direct that an election for a Senator, be held in the several Counties, composing the Senatorial Dis- trict aforesaid, on Monday the 15th inst. And I do further order and direct that the Chief Justices of the several Counties aforesaid give legal notice of said election, and have the same conducted, in all respects, in accordance with the Constitution and laws, regulating elections; that a proper certificate be given to the Senator elect; and that due returns be made according to law. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the Republic to be affixed. Done at Washington, the fifth day of January, A. D. 1844, and of the Independence of the Republic the eighth.
