Porter, Esq. -Sir- You are respectfully requested and hereby authorized to conduct such of the principal chiefs of the various tribes of Indians as may be at the Falls, to this place, that they may have an interview with the President. It is desired particularly to see the Chief recently arrived there from the Comanches. In performing the duties herein assigned you, you will ·be authorized to furnish the necessary subsistence on the route, which, with such other expenses as may be necessarily incurred, will be refunded to you upon proper vouchers being produced therefor. Should you not find it convenient to perform this service in person, you will please employ some individual for the purpose in whom you have confidence. To Messrs. Sloat and Sanchez: Gentlemen: Since your departure, information has reached here that several Indians are at the Falls of the Brazos; and among them a Kechi chief, who has come in from the Comanches. I have thought it best to endeavor to get him down here, for the purpose of a personal interview and talk; and as he has lately been with the Comanches and will probably return to them again
