them as a pledge of the sincerity of the President in proposing peace and an exchange of prisoners. You will impress upon the Indians a knowledge of the fact that the government has made arrangements for the establishment of trading houses on the Brazos and Trinity rivers; and the ad- vantages which will accrue to the various tribes who shall remain at peace and carry on a traffic with these traders; and that after peace is made, there will be blacksmiths SP.nt to them for the purpose of repairing their arms; and also, that after [the peace] trading houses will be established for the convenience of the Indians towards the Rio Grande. To Gibson May, Esq., Sir-You are hereby appointed as an Indian Agent with salary affixed by law. You will be furnished with the instructions of the Government for your guidance; and in all cases you will conform to the requirements of the Act regulating Indian Intercourse. You will specially be subject to the orders of the President in the discharge of the duties devolving upon you as agent aforesaid.
