Eldredge, Etc., Etc., Etc., · Sir- You will proceed to where the Commissioners are with the Indians, and say to them that I desire them to procure suit- able supplies for the council which will be held somewhere near the Brazos, and get through the business with as little delay as possible. They will make presents to the amount of fifteen hundred dollars in articles of use as well as Indian taste. The line will be agreeable to what was our understanding when I left, subject to convenient variations from points. The supplies purchased for the support of the council will be sufficient; but not any for waste. Let the issues be made with care. When the council sits, I wish Col. Eldredge and Mr. Tor- rey2 to be seated with the commissioners and referred to in their capacities so that the Indians · will regard them hereafter. I desire to see Luis Sanchez 3 and Acah-quash· 1 at Washington if convenient, as I will wish to see them on business. The men whom I sent as guides with Col. Eldredge, will receive no advances or pay until I see them. The commissioners will certify to the Secretary of the Treasury or to the President for supplies and presents purchased in due
