To William P. N. Marlin, Esq. Sir - Please deliver to Col. J. C. Eldredge such one of the Comanche girls left in your possession by the Indian Commis- sioners, as he may select to accompany him. He is authorized to receive her. Please see that she is decently and substantially clothed. Col. Eldredge is also authorized to take the Comanche boy "William Hockley," with him. By a compliance with this order you will oblige me, and all the aid and assistance afforded Col. E. in facilitating his departure upon his mission by the citizens among whom he may travel, will be good service to the country. · May 9, 1843. If it is necessary to appoint a Consul at Bremen, let Mr. Fisher:: be appointed, with instructions to make monthly reports to the Department of State, of all important matters. Fisher was appointed consul for the Republic of Texas at Bremen on December 20, 1843; the appointment was confirmed by the Senate on January 29, 1844. See Winkler (ed.), Scc,-et Jo1mials of the Senate, etc., 298. But William Henry Daingerfield, cha-,-gc d'affafres for Texas at The Hague did not learn of this appointment until after July 28, 1844. See Garrison (ed.), Diplomatic Co1·respondencc of the Republic of Texas, II, 1570. This position had been solicited by Fisher as early as May 8, 1843, because at the time he was preparing to leave for Germany to spend several years, and learning that Texas needed a consul at Bremen, he wrote to John Hall applying for the position.
