Smith· 1 Esquires, Indian Commissioners, &c: Gentlemen:- Your favor of the 25th instant, by express, reached me last night, and I proceed at the earliest moment to reply. The intelligence you have sent me is cheering, and I earnestly hope may be followed by the most satisfactory results. Your devotion to the important object in view, under so many dis- couraging circumstances, is entitled to the highest commenda- tion. In the formation of a treaty with the tribes represented in Council, it may be well to leave the lines of limits both between us and the several tribes, respectively, undefined for the present; with the understanding, however, that for mutual convenience and security, it shall be designated at the next general council.
