To WILLIAM HENRY DAINGERFIELD\
Washington, 28th Jany 1843 Dear Daingerfield, I have finished a sort of semi-official letter, to give you authority to do 1·ight about the notes-I must have the little fellows. They will save us and put down the greatest of wits. I do not wish anyone to know that they are to come until they are out. I regretted previous to your departure that I had so little time to converse with you alone.-! had ten thousand things to say to you about your trip to Europe, and other things which are unsaid- No Matter. I hope we will meet again and when I can, I will write to you,- You will to me I hope ! I intend to make more leisure, than I have enjoyed of late. I hope you will attend particularly to the [ torn ] on my Portrait, and consult with my friend Christy about the matter. I did wrong to speak of it in my semi-official letter to you, but when I wrote it I did not think I would have time to scribble you this note. I pray you on your arrival at Washington, to commend me to Mr. Van Zandt, and in England or France, to Colonel Ashbel Smith, 3 and announce to him, that he, as well as yourself, is a Knight of the order of San Jacinto, and the Ensign of the order, is a Green Ribbon, in the left breast, or Button hole of the coat opposite the heart. This I have a right to create, and as I am a friend to "Order," I surely have a right to start an order, and then to create some reward for the worthy, as we have no cash, to encourage Gentle- men in preserving order. If you don't like the thing in this shape, you can, when you see Smith, if you wish it when you see his uniform (if it is not Green) wear the Ribbon as a part of the uniform, and if it is Green, then wear a blue or Red Ribbon.
