Executive Department, 'Washington, January 16th, 1843. To Charles Mason, Esq., Auditor, &c. Sir-You will not audit the account of any member of Con- gress for the time for which they were absent by desertion from their duties. If the clerk gives certificates, it is your duty to curtail the claimant's account, so that they shall only receive the public's money for the time in which they rendered service. Men shall not receive pay who have produced hindrance to the Government by preventing a quorum, and who have thereby incurred many thousand dollars expense to the nation. To Col. John Warren, Sir,
By an appropriation of Congress, one thousand dollars have been placed at the disposition of the Executive for the pur- pose of fortifying the port of Velasco. You will proceed to the County of Brazoria and ascertain what aids (if any) you can derive from the citizens, and have everything in readiness to commence the work upon such plans as the amount appropriated and the contributions of the citizens will justify.
