During Lamar's administration he served as Commissary General (Secret Jounzals of the Senate, Re7nc.blic of Texas, 1836-1845, 136, 171). In 1841 he was elected representative of Travis County and served in that capacity until 1846 (House Jounzals, 1841-1846, passim). In 1842 he was active in preventing the archives from being removed from Austin to Houston (House Journals for 1842, passim). He served throughout the Mexican War, and was afterward appointed by President Pierce Consul General to Domin- ica, and served as confidential agent of the United States Government in its negotiations for the Bay of Samana. I doubt not but that you will sustain yourself in the station, with honor to yourself, and advantage to the countriJ. There will be no difficulty as to the time at which your nom- ination will be presented to the Honorable, the Senate, for confirmation. It will not be until the last of the session.
