TO THOMAS I. SMITH AND ELI CHANDLER 1

Washington, December 10, 1842.

To Col. Smith and Capt. Chandler, Gentlemen - Accompanying you have letters of instruction and authority to .proceed forthwith in concert with each other, to the removal of the public archives and stores from the City of Austin to this place. The country- which is deeply-deeply interested in the preservation of the land office and other records, will rejoice at your success. May Heaven favor your efforts. You must settle the question of rank, or precedence, among your- selves, in the management of the matter committed to your charge. It would perhaps be well to despatch a confidential express to Col. Ward, communicating to him your time and mode of pro- ceeding. You will receive herewith a copy of a letter addressed to Col. Ward. The sealed enclosure to his address you will please forward to him by some safe and confidential person, with posi- tive instructions not to place it in any other than Col. Ward's own hands. • I
