$73.00 Received for the above a draft drawn by the said Commissioners upon the Secretary of the Treasury, dated Nov. 20th 1842, as per receipts rendered at that date. December 2, 1842 R. H. Porter [Rubric] 3 Little information has been found concerning Robert H. Porter. The Comptroller Civil Service Records, Texas State Library, contain a number of documents that show that he furnished considerable supplies to the Texas Republic during the years 1842-1844. Porter was a man of considerable wealth and influence in the old Robertson County, and the newly formed Burleson and Milam counties. His farms and ranches were situated near the present town of Caldwell, Burleson County.

To AsHBEL SMITH 1 Texas, Washington, 6th Deer., 1842.

My dear Sir, I take pleasure in presenting to you Mr. Bar- nard2 who visits Europe with a view to form commercial con- nexions. That he is a gentleman of correct and honorable feel- ings and conduct, I can entertain no doubt. Mr. B. has been introduced to me by a friend of mine in whom I have unbounded confidence, a man of honesty and unimpeachable integrity of character. Mr. Brown to whom I allude is a planter of means residing near this place,• & for myself I would rely upon any pledge which he would tender me. He will be associated in con- nexion with Mr. Barnard in business as I understand from the Gentleman. Any attention which you may be pleased to extend to him, will be highly estimated by me. I hope he may be enabled to succeed in his desires to establish such a trade as he contemplates between the merchants of Europe and the planting interests of this country. We will produce the choicest raw materials on earth and in exchange we shall want and need European fabrics. Sam Houston. Hon. A. Smith, London. 1 Ashbel Smith Papers, The University of Texas Library. 2 E. L. Barnard was well received by Ashbel Smith, who recommended him to the Dutch Government as Dutch consul at Galveston.
