Chief Justice of the aforenamed County give notice of said elec- tion, and have the same conducted according to the law regulating elections, and give to the member elected the proper certificate of his election. Whereas, information has been received by the Executive of the capture and detention by the common enemy, Mexico, of Samuel Maverick, Representative elect from the County of Bexar, to the Seventh Congress; And whereas, the House of Representatives, now assembled, by a resolution of this date, has declared the Seat of Samuel Maverick~ to be vacant, and instructed the President to issue a writ of election, to be held in the said County of Bexar, to elect a member to fill said vacancy: Therefore, be it known, that I, Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas, by the authority vested in me by law, do, by these presents, order and direct that an election for Repre- sentative to fill the said vacancy be held in the County of Bexar, on Saturday the 17th instant; and it is further ordered that the Chief Justice of _the aforementioned County give notice of said election and have the same conducted according to the law regu- lating elections, and give to the member elect the proper certificate of his election.
