State whether or not you ever paid any public money, agreeably to appropriation, or under what circum- stances, to James Webb, Esquire. 2 It is desirable that the laws and constitution should be main- tained. AN ELECTION PROCLAMATION, DECEMBER 2, 1842 1 Whereas, information has been received by the Executive of the capture and detention by the common enemy, Mexico, of William E, Jones, Representative elect from the County of Gonzales, to the Seventh Congress; and Whereas, the House of Representatives now assembled, by a resolution of this date, has declared the seat of William E. Jones to be vacant, and instructed the President to issue a writ of election, to be held in the said County of Gon- zales, to elect a member to fill said vacancy: Therefore, be it known, that I, Sam Houston, President of the Republic of T'exas, by the authority vested in me by law, do, by these presents, order and direct, that an election for Representa- tive to fill the said vacancy be held in the County of Gonzales on Saturday, the 17th Instant; and it is further ordered that the
