WRITINGS OF SAM HOUSTON, 1842
made up the personnel of the commission: R. J. Gilchrist, L. WiJJiams, B. Booth, Sam B. Marshall, Rob S. Hulme, G. W. Terrell, E. H. Tarrant. 3 Beden Stroud. See Houston to Luis Sanchez, July 6, 1842. To COLONEL L. B. FRANKS 1 Executive Department, Washington, November 13th 1842. To Col. L. B. Franks, &c. Sir - Your letter by Mr. Neill has been received. I regret exceedingly that you have not been more explicit in your com- munication. You have not stated whether you have seen either the commissioners or the Indians. You speak about the commissioners and the prisoners; and about your having some presents which you designed taking up to the Indians. You have not mentioned of what description they are, or of what value. If you take any presents up to be given to the Indians, let them be placed in the hands of the commissioners for distribution, and the government charged with them. · I understood the Waco Village, the place of meeting, to be on the East side of the Brazos river. But in this I may have been mistaken; for I have just been informed that it is situated about ten miles above the mouth of the Bosque, on the West side of the river, agreeing with the description you gave to Mr. Neill. I desire you to convey the accompanying letter as soon as practicable to the commissioners, with the assurance that owing to high waters, it has been impossible to collect and forward the prisoners; but it will be done as soon as practicable, as we have no motive to retain them. Sam Houston. 1Executive Record Boole, No. 40, p. 157, Texas State Library. See Houston to Colonel L. B. Franks, January 5, 1842. To JAMES B. SHAW, COMPTROLLER 1 Executive Department, Washington, November 16, 1842. T·o James B. Shaw,2 Esq., Comptroller: Sir - You will reserve an amount of one thousand dollars of the Executive Contingent fund, to pay outstanding bills not yet
