PROCLAMATION OF THE APPOINTMENT OF AN ACTING QUARTER MASTER GENERAL1 Know all men by these presents :

That I, Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas, reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity, and ability of ,¥m. G. Cooke, Esquire, do appoint him Acting Quarter Master General of the forces of the Republic; and hereby authorize and empower him to appoint such Acting Assistants as may be necessary to a faithful discharge of the duties of said office. He is therefore carefully and diligently to discharge the duties of Acting. Quarter Master General and perform all manner of things thereunto belonging; and I do strictly charge and require all officers and soldiers under his command to be obedient to his orders. And he is to observe and follow such orders and directions as he shall receive from me or the future President of the Republic according to the rules and discipline of the Army. This appointment to continue in force during the pleasure of the President of the Republic of Texas, for the time being. Given under my hand and the Great Seal of the Republic at Washington, this the twenty-fifth day of October, A. D. 1842, and in the seventh year of the Independence of the Republic.
