On the next day they began the retreat to the Rio Grande (See Brown, II, 223-228). After the Mexicans had left Texas soil Caldwell retired to his home in Gonzales, where he died December 28, 1842. To Gail Borden, Jr., Esq., Collector, Galveston, Sir, - You are hereby requested to furnish Lt. D. H. Crisp with so much rope as he may deem necessary to rig a purchase for the purpose of raising the Sehr. San Bernard, and putting her afloat, and to supply such other articles as, in your judgment may be absolutely requisite, and not within his command. M. C.
