To MORGAN c. HAMILTON 1 City of Houston, September 22<l., 1842. Mr. Hamilton : Sir-I send an express to Montgomery to Col. Joseph L. Ben- nett2 to march with all his effective force forthwith and not to wait for the concentration of the whole force of the country, but to march with such portion as he can rally. Let the others follow. For each detachment, let a prudent man be appointed to go on and obtain supplies and prevent all waste. As the troops approach the enemy let them suffer no surprise. You will order the companies now in Houston and Harris county to march to San Antonio by the rp.ost direct and secure route. You will order two companies, from Galveston to sail round to Matagorda Bay and land at the most advisable point, which could be ascertained after arriving in the bay. Obtain the La Fitte, if she can be had, and let her be armed, so as to do service in transporting the troops, &c. Order Col. Mills 3 to assume the special duty of preparing the guns at the East end of the Island so that they may be useful. Let a shelter be placed over them, and ammunition prepared.
