To MORGAN C. HAMILTON 1

Executive Department, City of Houston, September 16, 1842.

To M. C. Hamilton, Esq., Secretary of War, &c. Sir- You will issue orders from the Department of War and Marine, to the citizens of Matagorda, Victoria, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Austin, Washington, Colorado, Fayette, Gonzales, and Bas- trop, to be in readiness and march forthwith upon San Antonio and harrass the enemy as much as possible, unless they evacuate the place immediately, or should have done so already. The three last named counties, with Travis, will keep an eye to Austin City; as it may be an object to take and burn Austin with the archives of the government. You will require Col. Jacob Snively~ to procure expresses to send with despatches to the various points, so that immediate action may be had, should the enemy continue in the country. If they should do so, we will soon be apprised of the fact and can enlarge the present plan of operations.
